On that date twenty-six people living in the area surrounding the French Broad Baptist Institute met in the first college building to organize a new church. It was at the meeting in September that the congregation voted to change the name of the church to Mars Hill Baptist Church. It was then ordered that the constitution be drawn after the form of the constitution of Little Ivy Baptist church.

Mark A. Driscoll born is an American evangelical pastor and author best known as the founder of Mars Hill Church. As of March , Mars Hill Church had 14, members in five states and fifteen locations. Driscoll has been described as “an evangelical bad boy, a gifted orator and [a] charismatic leader”  who is “hip yet hard-line”. In the summer of , Driscoll faced public criticism and formal complaints from Mars Hill staff members and congregants due to behavior that they described as abusive.
He was raised Roman Catholic in the Riverton Heights area of SeaTac , Washington ,  which he described as “a very rough neighborhood”  where serial killer Ted Bundy had picked up victims. One of the main reasons my parents moved from North Dakota to Seattle was to get away from some family members when I was a very young boy. In high school, he met his future wife,  Grace Martin,  daughter of Gib Martin, an evangelical pastor.
In , he graduated from Highline High School in Burien , Washington, where he served as student body president, captain of the baseball team, editor of the school newspaper, and the “most likely to succeed” in his graduating class. The same year, according to Driscoll, “God spoke to me He told me to marry Grace, preach the Bible, train men, and plant churches I began preparing to devote my life to obey [God’s] call for me.
After graduation, Mark and Grace relocated to Seattle , where they attended Antioch Bible Church and worked with that church’s college ministry as volunteers.

The events that have transpired at Mars Hill Church over the last few months have been dramatic and to some extent, unprecedented. After the resignation of Pastor Mark Driscoll October 14th , it was recently announced that Mars Hill is dissolving from one centralized multi-site, video teaching church into local, independent churches. The properties will be sold, the centralized support staff released, and each church will have the autonomy to decide its future.

No one does. Everyone comes to this conversation with sins of their own. And while it will take months to sort out the details of what happened and years to figure out what it means, there are a few lessons that leaders can glean even now that can help you and me lead more effectively in our churches.
There are more than a few. So in the spirit of learning from the good and the not-quite-as-good, here are 5 early lessons from the events and the legacy of Mars Hill:.
