Marshall Amplification is a British company that designs and manufactures music amplifiers , speaker cabinets , brands personal headphones and earphones, and, having acquired Natal Drums , drums and bongos. It was founded by drum shop owner and drummer Jim Marshall , and is now based in Bletchley , Milton Keynes , Buckinghamshire. Marshall’s guitar amplifiers are among the most recognised in the world.
Their signature sound, characterized by sizzling distortion and “crunch,” was conceived by Marshall after guitarists, such as Pete Townshend , visited Marshall’s drum shop complaining that the guitar amplifiers then on the market didn’t have the right sound or enough volume. Marshall also manufactures less expensive solid-state, hybrid vacuum tube and solid state and modelling amplifiers. After a successful career as a drummer and teacher of drum technique, Jim Marshall first went into business in with a small shop in Hanwell , London, selling drums, cymbals and drum-related accessories; Marshall himself also gave drum lessons.
According to Jim, Ritchie Blackmore , Big Jim Sullivan and Pete Townshend were the three main guitarists who often came into the shop and pushed Marshall to make guitar amplifiers and told him the sound and design they wanted. These were very popular with guitarists and bass players, but were very expensive. The three guitarists were among the first customers of the first 23 Marshall amplifiers made. The sixth prototype produced, in Jim’s words, the “Marshall Sound”, although at this time the only involvement Jim had was to sell the amps on a commission basis in his shop.
As business increased, Marshall asked the three to work for him in his shop, as he had more space and capital to expand.

Dating a Marshall amplifier can be a daunting task for even the most savvy of suitors — Amp Archives is here to help. The earliest Marshall amplifiers were made in and had no model or serial numbers. From until Marshall amplifiers were identified by a four-digit sequential number inside the back panel, reportedly starting with in and reaching at the beginning of More Examples. Beginning in Marshall abandoned the four-digit numbering system and began using model numbers, sometimes called series numbers and model codes.
While there are serial-like numbers during this era, no standard serial number format has been identified. The model numbers can be somewhat confusing because model numbers such as or can be mistakenly interpreted as the production year of the amplifier. Amplifiers from this era must be dated within this time span based on their features, or component manufacturers and codes, including speakers, potentiometers and transformers.
The model number takes the form of four-digits preceded or followed by letter codes describing amplifiers characteristics. The table below outlines the meaning of these letter codes. The full identifier of these amps was initially comprised of a model code, the serial production number and the date code. Letters were used as date codes to represent the year of production and this letter followed the serial production number.
Letters B, I, O and Q were not used to avoid confusing letters with numbers.

The best approach is to cross-reference the serial number with known features for the model during different eras and the personal account of previous owners. Getting the correct year is one thing, but getting the story behind an amp is the fun part. The guide for that is much simpler: be nice, ask questions, offer beer. If you have absolutely no idea whether your Marshall is old or new, a good place to start is the model name or series.
This will give you an approximate idea of the era during which your amp was manufactured. It’s also one more piece of evidence to pair with the serial number to corroborate the actual year.
